What’s New for the 2018 Honda Odyssey?
As one of the first minivans in the market when it debuted in 1994, the Honda Odyssey reigns supreme in its chosen segment. The fourth generation of production, which lasted from 2011 to 2017, is particularly memorable, since it marked seven consecutive years in which Honda sold more Odyssey units than any other automaker in the minivan class. And now, with a redesign for the 2018 model year, the Odyssey welcomes its fifth production cycle. The 2018 Honda Odyssey is split into LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite.
Powering the minivan is a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission goes on the LX, EX, and EX-L trims, while a 10-speed automatic gearbox goes on the upper-level Touring and Elite. Each transmission is accompanied by paddle shifters to simulate manual gear shifting and an Eco Assist system for boosting fuel efficiency by shutting down non-essential powertrain functions. Added on the Touring and Elite is idle-stop technology to cut down engine idling when coming to a stop, thus further improving fuel efficiency. With a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout, the minivan provides 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
As a three-row vehicle, the 2018 Odyssey provides room for seven people on the LX and eight people on the other trims due to second-row captain seats in the former and a second-row bench-style seat in the latter. Base-level comfort and convenience features include push-button engine start, cruise control, illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls, Bluetooth connectivity, text messaging ability, 8-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat, a multi-angle rearview camera, and a seven-speaker 160-watt audio system with a 5-inch color LCD screen.
Upgrades and additions with the EX include tri-zone automatic climate control, HD Radio, a complimentary SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based control, 8-inch high-resolution display, front-seat heating capability, and 12-way power adjustment and 4-way power lumbar support on the driver’s side.
On the EX-L, there’s auto dimming on the rearview mirror, two-position memory for the driver’s seat, and leather upholstery on the front and second rows. The Touring gets front-seat ventilating capability, a CabinWatch rear-seat camera with remote control, a rear Blu-Ray entertainment system with a 10.2-inch high-resolution widescreen display, a navigation system, a built-in vacuum cleaner called HondaVAC, subscription to HondaLink in-car connectivity, and mobile hotspot capability.
The Elite stands alone with wireless charging capability and an 11-speaker 550-watt audio system. For safety, the 2018 Odyssey gets vehicle stability control, an all-wheel anti-lock disc brake system, hill start assist, and eight airbags. Added on all trims save for the LX are collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and road departure mitigation.
