What’s New for the 2018 Honda Accord?

As one of the most successful nameplates in the automobile world, the Honda Accord has enjoyed more than four decades of record-breaking sales and an unprecedented string of accolades. Now on the verge of beginning its tenth production cycle, the Accord is available as a brand-new model for 2018. A number of changes and additions have been applied to maintain the Accord’s position as the king of midsize sedans.

For several years, Honda included the choice of getting an Accord with a V6 for optimizing acceleration. However, in the 2018 model year, the V6 is noticeably absent. In its place is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder (I-4) engine that is codenamed K20, which provides the same output as the supplanted V6, albeit with increased fuel efficiency. Notably, the 2.0-liter I-4 is a differently tuned version of the powerplant that propels the high-performance Type R Civic variant, on which the engine generates 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Similarly, the smaller, 2.4-liter I-4 available on the previous-generation Accord is replaced by the L15B7, a turbocharged 1.5-liter I-4 that can be found on the Honda Civic, where it outputs 170 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.

The 2018 Honda Accord makes history by being the first front-wheel-drive passenger car to feature a 10-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox is paired with the K20 engine to maximize the ability to accelerate, merge into traffic, and switch lanes with great ease. The L15B7 is glued to a continuously variable transmission, which changes seamless across a range of gear ratios, instead of relying on the energy-consuming gear shifting process used by traditional transmissions. Couple that with the smaller size of the 1.5-liter I-4, and the L15B7 configuration is the one to go to if you want to maximize fuel economy on the 2018 Accord. For greater control over gear shifting, each engine can be paired with an available 6-speed manual transmission. Continuing from where the ninth-generation Accord left off, the 2018 model has stronger and bolder lines and a more aerodynamic shape. In addition, LED headlights and taillights are standard for longer-lasting and more effective illumination. For the first time, Honda Sensing – a highly advanced suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies – is standard on all trims to alert you to things you might miss while on the road. Honda Sensing consists of collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition.
