What’s New for the 2017 Honda Civic?

Still new into its tenth production cycle, the Honda Civic maintains its supremacy as a perennial best-seller and well-rounded compact car. The 2017 model year marks the introduction of a five-door hatchback bodystyle, which joins the long-standing two-door coupe and four-door sedan. There’s also the sporty Si sedan and the high-performance Type R coupe.

Lower-end sedan and coupe trims go with the K20C2, which is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Higher-end sedan and coupe models, as well as the hatchback, go with the 1.5-liter L15B7 I4, which generates 174 horsepower and up to 167 lb-ft of torque. (The hatchback’s Sport Touring trim gets 6 more horsepower.)

The Civic Si goes with the 1.5-liter engine, which is tweaked to produce 205 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. And the Type R goes with the 2.0-liter I4, which is boosted to 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices consist of a 6-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission.

Although the 2017 Honda Civic can seat up to five people, it’s the hatchback that provides the most amount of passenger volume, as well as luggage space. On the higher-end trims of the sedan, coupe, and hatchback—in addition to the Si variant—Honda adds front-seating heating capability. The coupe and sedan EX-L and Touring levels in particular also get leather upholstery; on the sedan and hatchback, Honda adds 8-way power adjustment on the driver’s side. Exclusive to the Type R are high-bolstered sport seats with red-and-black suede-effect fabric and double red stitching.

For comfort and convenience, the 2017 Civic starts off with features like cruise control, illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, and four-speaker audio with a 5-inch color LCD screen. Upper-level trim or variant features includes dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, automatic dimming ability on the rearview mirror, a stereo system with up to 12 speakers, HD Radio, a three-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone-based control of infotainment functions, and a navigation system. Notably, the Si has a 10-speaker 450-watt stereo system, while the Type R has a 12-speaker 540-watt set-up. For safety, the 2017 Civic has electronic stability control, hill start assist, traction control, a rearview camera, anti-lock braking, and eight airbags (i.e., dual front impact airbags, dual side impact airbags, and dual front and dual rear side curtains). On certain trims or variants, Honda adds driver assistance tech features such as lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.
