February 4th, 2014 by

The 2014 Honda Accord is an impressive vehicle. It offers more luxury in the interior along with fuel-efficient performance and a refined design. Additionaly, the 2014 2014 honda accord 800x400pxHonda Accord is also exceptionally safe. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave both the coupe and sedan models their Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with the optional forward-warning collision system.

IIHS Safety Rating Results

Regardless of whether you choose the coupe or the sedan, you’re looking at an Accord with a solid safety rating as determined by the IIHS. The Institute rates vehicles either poor, marginal, acceptable, or good. These ratings help drivers decide on cars and help the insurance industry determine appropriate insurance rates.

Until recently, the IIHS had four main tests: side, roof strength, head restraints & seats, and moderate-overlap front. In all these four key areas, both Honda Accord models passed. Recently, though, the IIHS made it tougher for automakers with their small-overlap front crash test.

In the test, the car moves forward until it collides with a barrier that hits the car on the driver’s side corner. This has the same effect as if the car were to hit another vehicle from the front or strike pole. These types of collisions are quite dangerous and can destroy the front cabin in some cases. The Accord sedan received a top score of good and the coupe passed with an acceptable rating, which earns both vehicles the Top Safety Pick designation. This is quite notable since many models have had trouble and failed the new test.

NHTSA Safety Ratings

The government also agrees on the Honda Accord after it passed the NHTSA’s safety ratings. In this case, the Accord Coupe had perfect safety ratings across the board while the sedan was perfect apart from a four-star score for total frontal impact safety. Both models, though, were given five stars for overall protection.
