2018 Honda CR-V vs 2017 Honda CR-V

Serving Michigan City, La Porte, and Valparaiso

Since the mid-‘90s, the Honda CR-V helped establish—and has arguably led—the compact crossover segment. It has done so by providing plush interiors, outstanding gas mileage, and excellent engineering. The fifth generation might be the best production cycle yet, with the 2017 and 2018 model years as its first two entries. With no changes between the two, the 2017 and 2018 CR-V are the same vehicle. Four trims are available; they are the LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring.

Performance

The base-level LX is powered by a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that produces 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The other three trims go with the smaller but stronger 1.5-liter turbocharged I4, which produces 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a continuous variable transmission. Although front-wheel drive is standard, you can opt for an all-wheel-drive system for enhanced traction ability. It is worth noting, however, that the CR-V’s peak fuel economy of 28/34 mpg can be achieved by joining the 1.5-liter turbo I4 with the front-wheel drivetrain.

Appearance

The fourth-generation Honda CR-V overhauled the nameplate’s exterior profile with a wingspan-inspired front grille, sculpted sides, and sharp angles and lines for a more aggressive appearance. And the 2017 and 2018 model years further that design language with even sharper angles and lines. Standard on the vehicle are power side mirrors, multi-reflector halogen headlights, and a fin-type roof-mounted antenna. Upgrading to at least the EX adds fog lights, a power moonroof, a roofline spoiler, and heating ability and turn-signal indicators on the side mirrors. A power tailgate goes on the EX-L, which is upgraded to hands-free access on the top-level Touring. Also exclusive to the Touring are roof rails, LED headlights (instead of halogen ones), and dual chrome exhaust finishers. The 2017/2018 Honda CR-V—which has two rows for accommodating up to five people—offers a peak passenger volume of 105.9 cubic feet and a standard cargo volume measurement of 39.2 cubic feet. Going with the EX adds front-seat heating ability and driver-side 12-way power adjustability with 4-way power lumbar support. The EX-L and Touring get leather seat trim, driver-side two-position memory, and front-passenger 4-way power adjustability. Standard comfort and convenience features on the Honda CR-V include cruise control, Bluetooth® wireless technology, four-speaker 160-watt audio, and a 5-inch color LCD screen. Upgrading to the EX introduces additions or enhancements like dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, push-button engine start, a driver information center, hands-free text messaging ability, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, six-speaker 180-watt audio, and HondaLink® infotainment integration with a 7-inch touchscreen. Added on the EX-L and Touring are an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a garage-door opener. Unique to the Touring are HD Radio™, 7-inch touchscreen navigation, and nine-speaker 330-watt audio.

Safety

For safety, the Honda CR-V starts off with features such as electronic stability control, hill start assist, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, a multi-angle rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, and six airbags. On all trims but the LX, Honda adds the Honda Sensing® driver-assist package, which consists of collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist; as well as blind spot monitoring and auto high beams.
